ESA appoints new Independent Non-Executive Director to bring external perspective to board

The Environmental Services Association (ESA) has appointed new Independent Non-Executive Director, Helen Phillips, to its Board of Directors to contribute a valuable external perspective to the association and to help it shape environmental policy going forward.

Helen is a former senior environmental regulator and has held a number of non-executive roles since 2015.

With a particular interest in professional standards, Helen currently chairs the Chartered Insurance Institute, having previously chaired the Legal Services Board. Helen is also a Gambling Commissioner and chairs the UK’s largest provider of flexible workforce in the healthcare sector.

The Independent Non-Executive Director role with the ESA will support the organisation in its work to shape policy on high-profile environmental issues – influencing government, legislators, the regulator and other external stakeholders.

Helen’s appointment coincides with the publication of the ESA’s Vision 2040 position paper, setting out its ambition to achieve a circular economy in the UK by 2040 through a wide range of policy, societal and technological reform.

Executive Director of the ESA, Jacob Hayler, said: “Our ambition for the newly-created role of Non-Executive Director was for the association to benefit from an external perspective from someone who could challenge our board in a supportive and consensus-driven manner.

We wanted a great communicator with a detailed knowledge of the workings of Government, who can effectively promote the work our sector does at the highest levels, and I am very pleased to say that we have found these attributes in Helen, who we are delighted to welcome to the ESA.”

ESA Independent Non-Executive Director, Helen Phillips, said: I am delighted to join the Board of the ESA at a time when the UK Government has committed to embedding the circular economy at the heart of its environmental and economic agenda. I look forward to supporting the ESA play its full part in driving resource productivity, reducing landfill and cutting emissions to meet ambitious recycling and waste-diversion targets.”
